News: Soul Calibur II Shipped 1.6 Million in US.
Posted: 2003-09-09 18:44:38
Leading video games publisher, Namco Hometek Inc. announced today that SOULCALIBUR?II, the sequel to one of the most revered weapons-based fighter video games of all-time, shipped over 1.6 million units on its first day, the largest day one release in the history of Namco?s U.S. division.

?The release of SOULCALIBUR?II marks a monumental moment in Namco?s already rich video game history,? said Namco?s Chief Financial Officer, Robert Ennis. ?Never before has a Namco title sold as well in its U.S. debut and we hope that this is just a glimpse at what is to come for the ?Soul? franchise.?

?SOULCALIBUR?II is one of Namco?s most valuable video game franchises,? said Garry Cole, Senior Vice President of Sales, Namco Hometek Inc. ?I think that the value of the property is exemplified in that we were able to sell through nearly 10 percent of our initial launch quantity on day-one alone.?

SOULCALIBUR?II is now available on the PlayStation?2 computer entertainment system, the Nintendo GameCube, and the Xbox? video game system from Microsoft. The game features improved game play, upgraded graphics and a variety of game modes. SOULCALIBUR?II also received the ?Best Fighting Game? award at the 2003 Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. Along with additional game content unique to the U.S. version, SOULCALIBUR?II features 10 game modes, console-exclusive characters, a host of unlockable characters and arenas, and over 200 collectible weapons and items.

Unfortunately, the gameplay is no better and the graphics and art style are worse than the Dreamcast game of 4 years ago. This game is selling on the reputation made by that one (Soul Calibur). IMHO, another game has been tainted by a business necessity, namely, the underpowered PlayStation 2 hardware and its casual market ubiquity in Japan.

Impressive, although I wonder what the actual numbers are per system, especially since each version had its own exclusive character. Which in my opinion, was a brilliant marketing strategy!
